Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important political figure said the incident made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
