Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
